Change your thinking: Updating Catalog Layout Gains Airtex ACES Compliance Sometimes the solution for gaining ACES and e-Cat compliance means making a radical change to longstanding processes, such as how a print catalog is laid out. That was the case with Airtex Products, a major manufacturer of fuel pumps, when their mapped files – over 70,000 records – were rejected by Activant In 2006. "Jay Wright (Vertical Development president) said it was the catalog's layout," explained Airtex Catalog Manager Michelle Tucker, who made the bold move to follow VDI's advice and drastically change the layout used in Airtex's print catalogs for the past 25 years. As their catalog management partner for over 15 years, VDI most recently used their PIES module to help Airtex generate XML files for CARQUEST and win an award in the process (for details, click here.) To help them comply with ACES, VDI ungrouped Airtex's complicated multi-engine/multi-year groupings into single listings and created a new, more e-Cat friendly print catalog layout. The simplified layout allowed Airtex to generate more accurate electronic files, which they then submitted to Activant and WHI Solutions (Wrenchead) for review. The change worked. "Compared to previous years, our files were accepted with only minor fixes needed," said Tucker, who then based Airtex's printed catalog on the e-Cat layout, with great results. "Customers love it," said Tucker. "And since the system is Windows-based, it's much easier for making additions and deletions, saving me a lot of time." She credits VDI for their success. "I can't say enough good things about them," said Tucker. "If I ask VDI to do something, they always get it done, usually the same day." |

Change your e-Cat format: Major Retailers, WDs Switching to ACES and PIES In January, many VDI clients were notified that two of their major customers are asking that e-Cat data be supplied in ACES 2.0 and PIES 6.1 formats by year-end. That means companies who have not yet automated their data can get ahead of the curve now by contacting VDI. Options range from the e-Publisher system for mapping, managing and publishing data in multiple formats, to VDI's mapping service that can be married later to VDI's other database and catalog management systems. |
